Jeremiah 31:3
In Jeremiah 31:3 I am struck by Jehovah’s constancy. His affection does not depend on a person having a flawless record; he can keep showing loyal love while helping someone return. That blend of firmness and tenderness gives me a balanced view of his personality: he does not minimize sin, but neither does he quickly abandon someone who can change.
In Jeremiah 31:3 I am motivated to think about how I treat someone who is trying to recover from a mistake. I can avoid constantly bringing up the past or making that person feel permanently defined by it. If Jehovah draws people with loyal love, I too want to create an atmosphere where a repentant person feels that drawing closer to him is worth the effort.
In Jeremiah 31:3 I learn that Jehovah’s loyal love is not a passing reaction but a stable quality that supports his relationship with those who seek him. Although his people had made serious mistakes, he could draw responsive ones back. That teaches me that divine discipline never removes the possibility of restoring a sincere friendship with him.
