Reflection for today
There is a difference between accountability and permanent suspicion. When someone has genuinely repented, continuing to punish that person socially can work against the very restoration Jehovah wants. Paul did not tell the Corinthians merely to stop condemning the man. He told them to forgive and comfort him. That requires warmth.
I can examine my own response to people whose past mistakes are known. Do I reduce them to one chapter of their life? Do I keep emotional distance because it feels safer to remain judgmental? Do I repeat information that has no constructive purpose? A person may have accepted correction and made major changes, yet still struggle with shame. My attitude can either lighten that burden or quietly add to it.
Comfort does not mean pretending that serious wrongdoing was harmless. Jehovah’s standards stay firm. But firmness and mercy are not opposites. In fact, once repentance is evident, mercy supports the goal of discipline by helping the person rebuild a healthy relationship with Jehovah and the congregation.
A simple application might be to treat a repentant brother or sister as a whole person again: speak naturally, include them appropriately, notice their progress, and avoid making every interaction about the past. I would want that kind of dignity if I were recovering from a serious mistake. Remembering my own need for forgiveness makes compassion much easier.
