Full paragraph
IN LIFE there are situations in which reacting well can be quite challenging. At times, others do not treat us with as much respect as we would like. Someone may form a wrong opinion of us or deal with us unfairly. At other times, we face challenges that frighten us. What can help us? The Bible gives us the key: discernment.
Discernment is the ability to understand a situation well, to see beyond what is obvious. It helps us understand why things happen and why people act the way they do. As a result, we can be more prudent and sensible. For example, discernment helps us restrain our lips, know when to keep quiet, control anger, forgive others, and accept counsel and discipline. When we are discerning, what we do and say not only pleases Jehovah but also benefits us and those around us. This quality is especially helpful when we feel tempted to react hastily or let our emotions run free. Let us consider three Bible accounts that show how discernment can help us to be humble, remain calm, and trust Jehovah completely.
Main answer
Discernment is the ability to see beyond appearances and understand the deeper side of a situation. It helps us because it stops us before we speak or act impulsively; it gives us the self-control needed to keep quiet at the right time, control anger, forgive from the heart, and accept discipline willingly.
Additional comments
When we stop to evaluate a situation from Jehovah’s point of view, we make wise decisions that benefit us and also protect peace in the congregation.
Discernment also helps us put ourselves in the other person’s place. If someone treats us badly, we may realize that the person is dealing with pressures we do not see.
