Introduction

Discernment helps us react better in difficult situations

These opening paragraphs show what discernment is and why this quality helps us speak, react, and decide in a way that benefits our relationship with Jehovah.

1, 2

What is discernment, and how does it help us?

Paragraphs 1 and 2
Key thought

Discernment helps us see beyond what is obvious, control our reactions, and respond with spiritual maturity.

Full paragraph

IN LIFE there are situations in which reacting well can be quite challenging. At times, others do not treat us with as much respect as we would like. Someone may form a wrong opinion of us or deal with us unfairly. At other times, we face challenges that frighten us. What can help us? The Bible gives us the key: discernment.

Discernment is the ability to understand a situation well, to see beyond what is obvious. It helps us understand why things happen and why people act the way they do. As a result, we can be more prudent and sensible. For example, discernment helps us restrain our lips, know when to keep quiet, control anger, forgive others, and accept counsel and discipline. When we are discerning, what we do and say not only pleases Jehovah but also benefits us and those around us. This quality is especially helpful when we feel tempted to react hastily or let our emotions run free. Let us consider three Bible accounts that show how discernment can help us to be humble, remain calm, and trust Jehovah completely.

Main answer

Discernment is the ability to see beyond appearances and understand the deeper side of a situation. It helps us because it stops us before we speak or act impulsively; it gives us the self-control needed to keep quiet at the right time, control anger, forgive from the heart, and accept discipline willingly.

Additional comments

When we stop to evaluate a situation from Jehovah’s point of view, we make wise decisions that benefit us and also protect peace in the congregation.

Discernment also helps us put ourselves in the other person’s place. If someone treats us badly, we may realize that the person is dealing with pressures we do not see.

Instead of being proud, show humility

Naaman showed that discernment helps us listen and obey humbly

This account teaches that discernment helps us not to reject counsel simply because it comes from an unexpected person or in an unexpected way.

3

Who was Naaman?

Paragraph 3
Key thought

Naaman was a very important man, yet his illness showed that he also needed humility and help.

Full paragraph

To be truly successful, we need to put pride aside. How can discernment help us to do that? Think about Naaman’s example. Who was he? He was a man with great authority, the chief of the army of Syria, a nation north of Israel. However, Naaman had leprosy, a terrible skin disease.

Main answer

Naaman was a very important man of his time: the chief of the army of Syria. In spite of his power and prestige, he suffered from a serious skin disease called leprosy.

Additional comments

This account reminds us that health problems and life’s hardships affect everyone, no matter what position they hold.

4

How did Naaman show that he could see beyond the surface?

Paragraph 4
Key thought

Naaman showed discernment by listening humbly to a captive girl instead of despising her words.

Full paragraph

An Israelite girl who served Naaman’s wife told her mistress that there was a prophet in Israel who could cure her husband. Naaman could have thought: “She is only a little girl! Could this slave girl from an enemy nation really tell me anything useful?” Yet Naaman could see beyond the surface. Instead of reacting proudly and ignoring her, he humbly took her words seriously. So he asked the king of Syria for permission to go to Israel and seek a cure.

Main answer

He showed that he could see beyond appearances by listening humbly to the comment of a simple young captive girl. Rather than despising her because of her age or status, he valued the information and went to Israel.

Additional comments

Pride would have made Naaman reject the advice. But because he was discerning, he understood that Jehovah can use anyone to provide timely help.

5

What happened to Naaman when he arrived in Israel?

Paragraph 5
Key thought

Things did not happen as Naaman expected, and that tested how he would react.

Full paragraph

Naaman arrived in Israel and presented himself to King Jehoram, likely excited and eager to regain his health. However, Jehoram thought the king of Syria was simply looking for an excuse to start a conflict. When the prophet Elisha heard about this, he asked Jehoram to send Naaman to him. But things did not go as Naaman had imagined. Elisha did not even come out of his house to receive him and speak with him! Instead, he sent a messenger to tell him what he needed to do to be healed.

Main answer

On arriving in Israel, Naaman suffered a major disappointment. When he finally went to see Elisha, the prophet did not even come out to receive him in person but sent a messenger with the instructions.

Additional comments

Naaman expected special treatment because of his rank. This shows that Jehovah’s direction does not always come in the impressive way we imagined.

6

a) Why may Naaman have reacted proudly to the messenger’s instructions? b) How did Naaman’s servants show discernment, and what happened in the end?

Paragraph 6
Key thought

The discernment of his servants helped Naaman correct his reaction and obey humbly.

Full paragraph

At first, Naaman did not react well to the messenger’s instructions. In fact, he “became indignant” and “went away in a rage.” Why? Perhaps he thought that as the commander of the Syrian army he deserved more respect. Also, he may have felt that Elisha’s instructions showed contempt for Syria. In any case, Naaman was ready to return home without doing anything. However, his servants were discerning and begged him to think it over. Naaman put his pride aside and followed Elisha’s instructions humbly. As a result, he recovered his health.

Main answer

a) He reacted proudly because he felt his rank was not being respected and because he considered the instruction to bathe in the Jordan insulting.

b) His servants were discerning because they calmly helped him reason. Naaman reconsidered, humbled himself, obeyed, and became completely healthy.

Additional comments

Naaman’s servants did not get swept up in his anger. They stayed calm and used a simple, logical argument to help him.

In the end, Naaman showed he had a good heart by accepting counsel and correcting his attitude.

7

What do we learn from Naaman?

Paragraph 7
Key thought

Discernment moves us to be humble and to ask whether our reaction reflects pride or teachability.

Full paragraph

What do we learn from this account? When we are discerning, we see beyond what is obvious, beyond appearances. We also keep emotions from controlling us. In addition, discernment moves us to be humble because we understand that we do not know everything and that we need help from others, above all from Jehovah. Naaman showed a measure of discernment. Even though he did not yet serve Jehovah, he humbly listened to the Israelite girl, to his servants, and most important, to Elisha, who spoke in Jehovah’s name. Naaman was able to put his pride aside. As a result, he made a successful decision because he recovered his health. So before reacting to a situation, we should stop and think. For example, if someone gives us Bible-based counsel that we do not like, or if we do not understand some direction from the organization, we should ask ourselves: “Will my words and actions show humility, or pride?”

Main answer

We learn that discernment goes hand in hand with humility. It teaches us not to react proudly when we receive Bible-based counsel that makes us uncomfortable or direction we do not fully understand.

Additional comments

If a mature brother or an elder gives us a loving suggestion, discernment helps us see that Jehovah may be using that person to protect us.

Instead of reacting with anger, remain calm

David and Abigail show that discernment helps us slow down our anger

When we feel insulted or wronged, discernment helps us think before we speak or act.

8

In what situations might it be difficult to remain calm?

Paragraph 8
Key thought

It is hard to remain calm when we feel insulted, disrespected, or treated unfairly.

Full paragraph

All of us face frustrating situations, but discernment helps us to remain calm. Of course, that is not always easy. At times, we may have good reason to be upset, perhaps because someone did not treat us well or we suffered an injustice. Let us see how David and Abigail showed discernment in a very tense situation.

Main answer

It can be very hard to keep control when someone openly disrespects us or when we suffer an obvious injustice. In such moments, it is natural to feel indignation.

Additional comments

The Bible recognizes that anger can arise, but the danger lies in letting that emotion dominate us and lead us into wrongdoing.

9

How did Nabal treat David?

Paragraph 9
Key thought

Nabal answered with contempt and repaid good with evil.

Full paragraph

Picture the scene: David and his men are living as fugitives in the wilderness of Paran. There they protect the shepherds and flocks of a rich man named Nabal. When sheep-shearing time comes, David sends messengers to wish Nabal peace and respectfully ask for some provisions. But instead of showing gratitude for all that David and his men had done, Nabal treated them with contempt and even insulted them.

Main answer

Nabal treated David with complete rudeness and deep contempt. Even though David and his men had protected his flocks, Nabal not only refused to help them but insulted them.

Additional comments

Nabal proved to be foolish and stingy. He repaid good with evil, deeply hurting the feelings of David and his men.

10

How did Abigail and David show discernment?

Paragraph 10
Key thought

Abigail saw the good man behind David’s anger, and David was willing to listen to wise correction.

Full paragraph

How would you have felt if you had been David? It is easy to understand why David became angry. He was so furious that he wanted to destroy Nabal. But while he was on the way, someone came out to meet him. It was Abigail, Nabal’s wife, a very sensible woman. How did she show discernment? She was able to see beyond David’s exaggerated reaction. She realized he was a good man and did everything she could to calm him down. She brought many gifts and advised him humbly. David too showed discernment because he listened carefully to Abigail and recognized that her wise words reflected Jehovah’s point of view. In the end, David calmed down and avoided making a terrible mistake.

Main answer

Abigail showed discernment by understanding that David’s fury was a reaction to Nabal’s insult. She acted quickly, brought provisions, and spoke with tact. David, in turn, showed discernment by listening to her and recognizing that Jehovah was using her to stop him.

Additional comments

Abigail appealed to David’s conscience and helped him think about the consequences of acting impulsively. That shows remarkable spiritual insight.

11

How does discernment help us when someone or something makes us angry?

Paragraph 11
Key thought

Discernment makes us think about consequences before speaking or acting in anger.

Full paragraph

What do we learn from this account? When we are discerning, we can remain calm even if we have reason to be angry. Also, we think about the consequences of our words and actions. When Abigail reminded David of Jehovah’s view of the matter, he gained control of his fury. If something makes us furious or frustrates us, we should not react angrily, wildly, and without thinking. We should talk the matter over with Jehovah and take time to find out what he thinks about it. Then we will be better able to control our emotions.

Main answer

It helps us because it forces us to measure the consequences of what we are about to say or do before we act impulsively. Instead of exploding, we should step back, pray to Jehovah, and meditate on Bible principles.

Additional comments

Reacting wildly usually makes matters worse. Discernment gives us room to breathe, slow down, and view things with Christian maturity.

12

How can others help us to be discerning and remain calm?

Paragraph 12
Key thought

Jehovah can use mature Christians to help us see a tense situation more clearly.

Full paragraph

Just as Jehovah used Abigail to help David see beyond the surface, he can use others to help us be discerning. So if a situation makes us angry, a good idea is to speak with a mature brother who can help us see matters as Jehovah sees them. On the other hand, if we see a friend reacting like David, can we imitate Abigail and show him Jehovah’s point of view? God will surely bless us if we work to help others be discerning and remain calm.

Main answer

Jehovah can use mature brothers or elders to open our eyes when anger clouds our thinking. Seeking counsel helps us view the matter from Jehovah’s perspective.

Additional comments

Plans succeed when there is consultation. We too can become an Abigail for others by helping them calmly see Jehovah’s point of view.

Instead of being afraid, trust in Jehovah

Jonah learned to focus on Jehovah’s power instead of the size of the danger

Discernment helps us not to freeze in fear but to remember that Jehovah can help us even when we feel trapped.

13

How does discernment help us to see beyond our fears?

Paragraph 13
Key thought

Discernment reminds us that any danger is small compared with Jehovah’s immense power.

Full paragraph

There are situations in life that frighten us. But discernment helps us to see beyond our fears: it reminds us that anything or anyone who terrifies us is nothing in comparison with Jehovah’s immense power. Our God can help us in any situation, even if it seems that we are trapped in a dead end. Jonah faced exactly that need. Though he was a spiritual man, he needed more discernment to carry out a difficult assignment successfully.

Main answer

Discernment reduces fear by reminding us of how great our God is. When we stop focusing on the size of the problem and start focusing on Jehovah’s power, fear loses its grip.

Additional comments

Some situations seem impossible to us, but discernment assures us that for Jehovah there are no impossible situations.

14

Why may Jonah have been frightened by the assignment Jehovah gave him?

Paragraph 14
Key thought

Jonah’s assignment meant going to a city known for violence and announcing destruction.

Full paragraph

Jehovah assigned Jonah a frightening task: to go to the Assyrian city of Nineveh and announce that its inhabitants would be destroyed. If you had been Jonah, how would you have felt? Traveling on foot from Israel to Nineveh took about a month. The Assyrians were known for being cruel and violent. In fact, the Bible calls Nineveh “the city of bloodshed”. What did Jonah do? Instead of doing what Jehovah commanded, he decided to run away.

Main answer

It is understandable that Jonah felt afraid because Nineveh was famous for cruelty. Also, the trip meant walking for a long time toward an enemy city in order to announce destruction.

Additional comments

By focusing on the bad reputation of the Ninevites, Jonah let fear cloud his trust in Jehovah.

15

What helped Jonah to trust Jehovah more?

Paragraph 15
Key thought

Jehovah’s correction and rescue helped Jonah obey with greater faith.

Full paragraph

Jehovah reminded Jonah of how immense his power is. Even while the prophet was fleeing, Jehovah saved his life in a spectacular way. That impressed an important lesson on Jonah’s mind and helped him see beyond his fears. He had no reason to fear the Ninevites, because Jehovah could protect him from any danger. Jehovah gave him a second opportunity. And what did Jonah do this time? He obeyed and went to Nineveh. There he had great success because the people listened.

Main answer

What helped Jonah was Jehovah’s correction and miraculous rescue. Seeing that Jehovah had power over the sea and over his life made Jonah reflect, trust more, and obey.

Additional comments

Jonah’s prayer shows that he understood that salvation belongs to Jehovah and that obedience mattered more than fear.

16

How does discernment help us to face intimidating situations?

Paragraph 16
Key thought

Discernment helps us shift our focus from the danger to the fact that Jehovah is on our side.

Full paragraph

What do we learn from this account? We do not want anything, especially fear of man, to hold us back from serving Jehovah. Through discernment, Jonah focused on the fact that God was on his side and not on the challenges ahead. We too can see beyond our fears if we think about how Jehovah has helped and protected us in the past. Also, let us meditate on examples of brothers who successfully faced intimidating situations and responsibilities because they trusted in Jehovah. Let us trust Jehovah completely and help others to do the same. That will show that we are discerning.

Main answer

Discernment helps us avoid the trap of fearing man. It enables us to stop obsessing over the danger and focus on the fact that Jehovah is on our side.

Additional comments

Remembering how Jehovah has helped us in the past and reflecting on the faithful example of other brothers strengthens our confidence to move ahead.

17

What can we do to become more discerning?

Paragraph 17
Key thought

Discernment grows when we study, meditate, and ask Jehovah for holy spirit.

Full paragraph

As we have seen, discernment helps us handle difficult situations successfully. What can we do to become more discerning? No one is as discerning as Jehovah is, and he helps his servants develop this quality. How does he do that? By means of his Word, he gives us counsel so that we can make good decisions and control our emotions. So we should meditate carefully on everything we read in the Bible. And he also gives us his spirit so that we can have discernment, so let us not hesitate to ask for it constantly. If we make full use of these helps, when we face a difficult situation we will be able to see matters as Jehovah does and react in the best way.

Main answer

To increase our discernment, we need to study the Bible with a desire to apply it, meditate deeply on what we read, and keep asking Jehovah for holy spirit.

Additional comments

True wisdom grows through personal study and meditation, not just through human experience.

18

What are you determined to do?

Paragraph 18
Key thought

We should keep asking Jehovah for discernment and make up our mind to show it at all times.

Full paragraph

Discernment is a very valuable treasure. Therefore, let us keep asking Jehovah to give it to us. If we do that, we will never leave the path of discernment. Let us be determined to show this quality always, no matter what happens. Then we will succeed and make Jehovah happy.

Main answer

We should be determined to seek discernment as a treasure and to show it in every part of life. In that way we will remain steady, react better, and make Jehovah happy.
