Watchtower Study comments

The comments are organized by question, full paragraph, main answer, and additional comments so you can prepare a clear and natural participation.

Introduction

Even important things can distract us if they take the wrong place

The opening paragraphs help us see that not all distractions begin as bad things. Sometimes they start as legitimate matters that slowly crowd out what is spiritual.

1

How could something important become a distraction?

Paragraph 1
Key thought

An important matter becomes a distraction when it pushes Jehovah’s priorities out of our focus.

Full paragraph

IMAGINE that you are driving and someone calls you on the phone. It may be an important call, but you know you need to focus on the road and not get distracted. So you choose to give your full attention to what matters most at that moment. That example shows that sometimes we have to fight distractions and decide what is most important.

Main answer

Like a driver who receives an important call, we sometimes face matters that seem urgent but could pull us away from what matters most. Something important becomes a distraction if we let it take attention away from our highest priority, our spiritual course.

Additional comments

The driving example is powerful because even a small distraction behind the wheel can be dangerous. In the same way, if we take our eyes off the spiritual road to handle secondary matters, our eternal life is at risk.

At Matthew 6:22, Jesus spoke about keeping the eye focused or simple. That means not trying to look in two directions at once. The most important thing must always remain first.

2, 3

a) How could something important become a distraction? b) How will this article help us?

Paragraphs 2 and 3
Key thought

The article helps us identify today’s distractions, study Jesus’ example, and copy his way of staying focused.

Full paragraph

Our lives are full of important activities. And we know that our spiritual activities have the highest priority (Matt. 6:33). Jehovah’s servants are like good drivers: we try to keep clear in mind what things could distract our attention from the road ahead (Prov. 4:25; Matt. 6:22).

Of course, no one plans to get distracted from spiritual activities. Still, all of us face situations that can easily steal our attention (Luke 21:34-36). To help us stay focused in Jehovah’s service, we will examine: 1) what things could distract us, 2) what Jesus did so that nothing distracted him, and 3) how we can follow his example.

Main answer

a) Something important becomes a distraction when it steals the time, energy, or focus that should be directed toward spiritual things.

b) This article will help us by examining three points: the things that could distract us today, Jesus’ perfect example in facing distractions, and how we can apply his methods ourselves.

Additional comments

Luke 21:34 warns that our hearts could become weighed down. That shows distractions are not always bad things in themselves; often they are life’s pressures building up little by little.

By studying Jesus’ example, we will see that he had very strong reasons to be diverted, yet he stayed focused. His example gives us practical strategies we can imitate.

What could distract us?

Distractions often enter through legitimate concerns, anxiety, or escape habits

This section helps us look honestly at where our time and attention can go when life becomes heavy.

4-6

What things could easily distract us?

Paragraphs 4 to 6
Key thought

The most common distractions usually come from legitimate concerns, anxiety about world conditions, and entertainment used as an escape.

Full paragraph

There are many things in life that require our attention, such as certain medical, family, or personal matters. All these things are important and deserve time. But could they become distractions? Yes, if they absorb us so much that they leave us with no time or energy for anything else.

Also, in this system, many of us are suffering because of political instability, economic problems, outbreaks of disease, and constant violence. As a result, worry may consume us and we may keep thinking about our problems all the time.

We may know people whose lives have been changed by these painful conditions. It is understandable that they feel distressed, because humans were not created to live under nonstop suffering. So it is no surprise that some feel they have lost the possibility of having a normal life. For that reason, some people try to ease their pain and clear their mind by filling their life with entertainment. What can we do if we feel that way? Let us see what Jesus did so that nothing distracted him from serving Jehovah.

Main answer

Distractions can come from three main areas: first, normal personal, medical, or family matters that drain too much of our energy; second, anxiety and fear caused by world news and financial pressure; and third, excessive entertainment used as an emotional escape.

Additional comments

It is important to notice that paragraph 4 speaks about things that are important. The danger is not taking care of family or health, but letting those matters absorb us to the point that we have no room left for Jehovah.

In the case of entertainment, it is natural to want relief. But if we fill our life with amusements in order to escape reality, that temporary relief ends up stealing valuable time from spiritual priorities.

What did Jesus do so that nothing distracted him?

Jesus faced many pressures but refused to let them pull him away

These paragraphs show that Jesus also had real reasons to get sidetracked, yet he chose to remain fully focused on his Father’s will.

7

What possible distractions did Jesus face?

Paragraph 7
Key thought

Jesus lived surrounded by social suffering, political pressure, and even well-meant advice that could have diverted him from his mission.

Full paragraph

Jesus faced many situations that could have become distractions, such as the social and political problems of his day. For example, poverty and sickness were very common. People suffered under the Romans and under other Jews. Seeing that Jesus had the power to perform miracles, some wanted to make him king. In addition, Satan tempted him by offering him a shortcut to rule the world. And the apostle Peter, one of Jesus’ closest friends, once encouraged him to take an easier path and said: “Be kind to yourself, Lord!”.

Main answer

Jesus faced extreme poverty, Roman oppression, and the temptation of people wanting to make him king in order to solve their social problems. Satan offered him world power, and even his good friend Peter tried to persuade him to choose a more comfortable life.

Additional comments

Imagine the pressure. Jesus had the power to end poverty immediately. Getting involved in politics or curing absolutely everyone could have been a major temptation to distract him from preaching the Kingdom, which was his true mission.

Sometimes distractions come from people who love us. Peter’s advice sounded caring, but Jesus immediately recognized that it was a harmful line of thinking disguised as kindness.

8

What did Jesus do so as not to be distracted?

Paragraph 8
Key thought

Jesus thought like his Father, stayed busy in spiritual work, and never lost sight of what mattered most.

Full paragraph

What did Jesus do so as not to be distracted? First, he copied Jehovah’s way of thinking. Second, he kept busy in spiritual activities. Third, he always kept clear in mind what was most important. He firmly rejected Satan’s temptations and was not influenced by Peter’s well-meant but mistaken advice. Jesus did not allow what people thought, said, or did to distract him from carrying out God’s will.

Main answer

Jesus used three strategies: he made sure to think exactly like his Father, he stayed fully occupied in spiritual work, and he kept his priorities clear, remembering that the most important thing was to do God’s will.

Additional comments

His firm rejection was key. Jesus did not hesitate or debate when Peter gave wrong advice; he rejected it immediately because he knew it went against what mattered most.

Doing God’s will was food for Jesus. That shows that his spiritual focus was not a burden but the source of his strength and stability.

How can we fight distractions?

Think like Jehovah, fill life with spiritual things, and use good judgment

This final part turns Jesus’ example into practical decisions about how to think, how to use time, and how to prevent entertainment from becoming a spiritual thief.

9

According to Ephesians 5:17, what must we do?

Paragraph 9
Key thought

Our first defense against distractions is training the mind to think like Jehovah.

Full paragraph

Learn to think as God does. In that way we will be able to understand what Jehovah’s will is. We can discover what pleases him by reading his Word and meditating on it. And how can we know what Jehovah wants us to do in a situation about which the Bible says nothing directly? By becoming familiar with his way of thinking and letting ourselves be guided by it.

Main answer

We must work at thinking like Jehovah by reading the Bible and meditating on it. Then, even when there is no specific rule written for a given situation, we will know what kind of decision pleases him.

Additional comments

It is not enough to memorize texts; we need to understand the principles behind them in order to develop a Christian mind.

Thinking like God is our best defense. If we know what he loves and hates, then when a subtle distraction appears, our trained conscience will warn us quickly.

10

How can we better understand Jehovah’s way of thinking?

Paragraph 10
Key thought

We understand Jehovah’s mind better when we meditate on Bible accounts with personal questions and pray for his help.

Full paragraph

We will better understand Jehovah’s way of thinking by meditating on Bible accounts that show how he treats and guides people. When reading a Bible account, we should ask ourselves questions such as: “What does this teach me about Jehovah? What do I need to change so that my thinking is in harmony with his?”. Of course, God is far wiser than we are. So we do well to turn to him and ask him to teach us to do his will. That is why we ask him to help us understand his way of thinking and to see matters as he sees them.

Main answer

We do that by reading and meditating on the Bible while asking questions such as: “What does this teach me about Jehovah?” and “What do I need to change in myself?” We also pray for help to see things from his point of view.

Additional comments

Reading the Bible without meditating is like eating without digesting.

To think like God, we often have to accept that our natural way of seeing things is wrong.

11

What does Jehovah want?

Paragraph 11
Key thought

Jehovah wants us ready for the end and not crushed by anxiety.

Full paragraph

As we learn to think like Jehovah, we understand that he wants us not to get distracted so that we will be ready for the end of this system. He also wants us not to be crushed by worries. That is why he gives us good counsel to know what to do if we begin to worry too much about work, health, family, or other matters. He also encourages us to ask him for wisdom and strength to deal with our problems.

Main answer

Jehovah wants us to stay alert and ready for the end. He does not want us crushed by daily anxiety, so he teaches us to turn to him instead of becoming overwhelmed by work or health concerns.

Additional comments

Jehovah already knows what material things we need. If we really believe that, we will stop losing focus trying to secure the future by our own strength alone.

Jehovah does not simply tell us not to worry. He gives us tools: he urges us to ask him for wisdom and to throw our burden on him so that our mind can remain free for service.

12

What will help us to be happy despite the bad things happening in this world?

Paragraph 12
Key thought

Real happiness comes from staying busy in spiritual activities, not from obsessing over things we cannot control.

Full paragraph

Keep busy in spiritual activities. All of us are troubled by the bad things happening in this world, and there is nothing we can do to stop them. So, in order not to be distracted by things beyond our control, the best thing is to focus on spiritual activities. Jehovah created us with spiritual needs, and we will be happy if we satisfy them. And we do that by getting to know Jehovah better through his Word and by doing our best in whatever aspect of our worship is within our reach.

Main answer

What will help us is staying busy in spiritual activities. Instead of becoming anxious over bad news we cannot control, satisfying our spiritual need through Bible study and service to Jehovah is what gives real happiness.

Additional comments

Real happiness does not come from ignoring problems but from putting our energy into our relationship with God.

Keeping the mind active in God’s things blocks anxious thoughts.

13

How do we make the best use of our time?

Paragraph 13
Key thought

Making the best use of our time includes limiting excessive bad news and using more energy in the ministry.

Full paragraph

At Ephesians 5:15, 16 we are given counsel that all Christians want to follow: make the best use of your time. It urges us to be careful how we use the time we still have before the end of this wicked system. If we spent a lot of time keeping up with the constant flood of bad news, we might end up distracted, discouraged, and less enthusiastic in Jehovah’s service. It is far better to limit how much news we watch or read. In that way, we will not feel overwhelmed and we can stay busy in spiritual activities. Also, could we expand our ministry, for example by making more return visits?

Main answer

We make the best use of our time when we limit our intake of negative world news because it discourages us. Instead, we can use that saved time to expand our ministry, such as by making more return visits.

Additional comments

The flood of bad news is a subtle tactic used to rob us of joy.

If we cut even a little time from news or entertainment and use it for a return visit, we are buying valuable time for Jehovah’s service.

14

How does keeping busy in spiritual activities help us?

Paragraph 14
Key thought

Spiritual activity helps us see world crises in balance and respond with calm rather than panic.

Full paragraph

Keeping busy in spiritual activities helps us to view the times we live in in a balanced way. We do not worry excessively when we see political instability, economic problems, and so much sickness, because all these things were foretold in the Bible. Instead of letting fear dominate and distract us, we trust that Jehovah will fulfill his purpose for the future. We stay calm because we have no doubt that Jehovah is at our side.

Main answer

It helps us stay balanced and not panic. When we stay occupied in God’s things, we remember that current crises were foretold in the Bible, and fear is replaced by confidence that Jehovah is in control.

Additional comments

The person who looks to Jehovah first does not panic over economic problems.

Even when the world seems chaotic around us, being immersed in preaching and Bible reading gives a peace and calm that those who do not serve Jehovah cannot understand.

15

How will good judgment help us?

Paragraph 15
Key thought

Good judgment protects us from adopting the world’s attitude toward fun and helps us keep entertainment in balance.

Full paragraph

Always keep clear what is most important. Although recreation has its place, we need soundness of mind so that the world’s way of thinking does not rub off on us. Good judgment will help us to keep a balanced view of entertainment and make wise decisions. Those decisions will show that we think like Jehovah and keep clear what matters most.

Main answer

Good judgment protects us from the shallow attitude of a world that lives for entertainment. It allows us to enjoy recreation in balance and make wise decisions that show Jehovah remains our top priority.

Additional comments

We need sound judgment in how we use leisure time.

Good judgment does not mean banning fun; it means controlling it.

16

What was Jesus focused on during the hours before his death?

Paragraph 16
Key thought

Even in his darkest hour, Jesus kept his focus through intense prayer and loyalty to his Father’s will.

Full paragraph

Jesus always kept clear what was most important. Even during the hours before his death, he was fully focused on remaining faithful to Jehovah and carrying out his will. That is why he prayed intensely. Unlike Jesus, who stayed watchful, his disciples fell asleep. They were worn out from grief.

Main answer

Despite the enormous pressure of the hours before his death, Jesus focused completely on doing his Father’s will and staying loyal, using intense prayer so as not to become distracted.

Additional comments

While the apostles gave in to exhaustion and grief and fell asleep, Jesus stayed alert through prayer.

In life’s darkest moments, the answer is not to escape reality but to pray more intensely as Christ did.

17

Why do many people use social media, and what might happen to them?

Paragraph 17
Key thought

Social media is often used as emotional escape, but it can easily absorb time, energy, and spiritual focus.

Full paragraph

Like Jesus’ disciples, we too may feel worn out by sadness when we see all the bad things happening in this world. Many people turn to social media to forget their problems and stay entertained for hours and hours. True, social media can be used to stay in touch with friends and relatives who are far away and to share news, photos, and similar things. However, it is easy for it to absorb us so that we end up spending a great deal of time and energy trying to keep up with everything new.

Main answer

Many people use social media to try to forget their problems, but the risk is huge: it can easily absorb us to the point that we waste hours and emotional energy trying to keep up with everything.

Additional comments

Infinite scrolling is one of the most aggressive time-stealers of our age.

Very often, these platforms leave people more drained and emptier than before.

18

Why do we need good judgment when choosing our entertainment?

Paragraph 18
Key thought

Without good judgment, digital entertainment can drag us from harmless content into things that seriously damage spirituality.

Full paragraph

We also need good judgment if we use apps or online platforms to watch movies, series, or short videos, and to play video games. However, good judgment will help us choose both the type and the amount of entertainment. For example, after watching one video, the app may suggest others and expose us to violent or immoral images. Consider what happened to a brother in Asia. At first, he watched highlight clips from certain movies. Then he started watching the suggestions that popped up. Over time, he ended up watching immoral scenes, and later pornography. But he took steps to stop. What did he do? He deleted certain apps he had been using to access entertainment media and limited the amount of time he spent on his phone.

Main answer

We need good judgment because internet algorithms are designed to trap us. If we are not careful, a harmless video can quickly lead us to violent or immoral material that damages our spirituality.

Additional comments

The brother in Asia did not begin by looking for pornography; it was the result of being carried along by suggested entertainment.

Sometimes, to save our spirituality from distractions, we need to be firm about what we install on our devices.

19

What could happen if we focus too much on leisure and vacations?

Paragraph 19
Key thought

Rest is useful, but if leisure becomes central it steals time from the things that truly sustain faith.

Full paragraph

We also need good judgment when making decisions about leisure time and vacations. All of us need to relax and disconnect from time to time. But if we focus too much on those activities, we run the risk of losing balance and stealing time from the more important things.

Main answer

The danger is losing balance and stealing time from spiritual matters. Although rest is good for health, if vacations and leisure become the center of our life, we end up neglecting the more important things.

Additional comments

A useful test is whether we plan our service to Jehovah with the same energy and detail that we plan our vacations.

Leisure should recharge us so we can serve God better, not help us escape reality.

20

How do we benefit from fighting distractions?

Paragraph 20
Key thought

Fighting distractions helps us preserve peace, use life well, and hold firmly to the real hope.

Full paragraph

As we have seen, we benefit if we fight the things that could distract us from what matters most, namely our service to Jehovah. With Jehovah’s help, we will be able to deal with life’s problems, we will not worry excessively about what is happening in this world, and we will not focus too much on entertainment and amusements. So let us do all we can to think like Jehovah, keep busy in spiritual activities, and always keep clear what is most important. In that way, we will not only succeed in fighting distractions but also hold firmly to the real life.

Main answer

We benefit tremendously, because we gain peace instead of excessive worry about the world and the self-control needed not to lose ourselves in entertainment, thus holding firmly to the prize of everlasting life.

Additional comments

Staying focused spares us unnecessary emotional emptiness caused by the world’s distractions.

By thinking like God and staying active in his work, we protect our hope and keep hold of the real life.
