Jesus Dies at Golgotha
This lesson reviews the final hearing before Pilate, Jesus’ execution, and the love he showed for others even in his last hours.
Reading for lesson 90
Paragraph 2
ReadingThen Pilate sent Jesus to Herod, the ruler of Galilee, to see if he could find anything to accuse him of. Herod saw that Jesus had done nothing wrong and sent him back to Pilate. Pilate then told the crowd: “Neither Herod nor I find this man guilty of anything. I will release him.” But the people kept shouting: “Kill him! Kill him!” The soldiers whipped him, spat on him, and struck him. They put a crown of thorns on him and mocked him, saying: “Greetings, king of the Jews!” Pilate told the people again: “I find no wrong in this man.” But they shouted: “Nail him to the stake!” So Pilate handed Jesus over to be executed.
Paragraph 3
ReadingThen they led Jesus to a place called Golgotha. They nailed him to a stake and left him hanging there. Jesus prayed to Jehovah: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” The people mocked Jesus, saying: “If you are the Son of God, come down off the stake and save yourself!”
Paragraph 4
ReadingOne of the criminals hanging beside Jesus said: “Remember me when you get into your Kingdom.” Jesus promised him: “You will be with me in Paradise.” In the afternoon, darkness fell for three hours. Some of the disciples stood near the stake, including Mary, Jesus’ mother. He asked John to care for Mary as though she were his own mother.
Paragraph 5
ReadingAt the end, Jesus said: “It has been accomplished!” He bowed his head and breathed his last. At that moment, a very strong earthquake occurred. The great curtain of the temple that separated the Holy from the Most Holy was torn in two. Then an army officer said: “Certainly this man was God’s Son.”
Questions and answers for lesson 90
Why did Pilate allow Jesus to be killed?
2 answersPilate allowed Jesus to be killed because he gave in to fear of man and the pressure of the crowd. Even though he publicly acknowledged several times that Jesus was guilty of nothing, and even though Governor Herod agreed with him, Pilate chose to satisfy the shouting and agitation of the crowd and the religious leaders in order to avoid unrest and protect his own political position.
When we analyze the Bible account, we see that Pilate acted cowardly and without justice. He yielded to emotional blackmail and to the accusations of the chief priests. Even though he knew Jesus was innocent, he allowed him to be scourged, mocked, and finally handed over to be executed on the stake simply to calm the social pressure of the moment.
Jesus cared more about others than about himself. How did he show it?
2 answersJesus showed this beautiful self-sacrificing love in three moving ways while he was suffering on the stake. First, he prayed to Jehovah asking that the soldiers executing him be forgiven. Second, he comforted the repentant criminal beside him by promising that he would be with him in Paradise. Third, he cared about the future well-being of his mother, Mary, by entrusting her care to his beloved disciple John.
He showed it by not focusing on his own physical pain or on the cruel mocking of the crowd. Right up to his final breath, Jesus’ priority was to bring comfort and protection to those around him. His mind was not on saving himself but on faithfully carrying out his Father’s will so that all mankind could have the opportunity to receive forgiveness of sins.
Bible references for lesson 90
2 Corinthians 1:20
This text highlights that Jesus’ faithful death on the torture stake was the legal step needed to guarantee that all Jehovah’s promises would be fulfilled without fail. By keeping perfect integrity to the very end, Jesus validated the divine purpose, ensuring that blessings such as the earthly Paradise will become an absolute reality for us.
John 19:30
Jesus’ final words show that he completed with total success the assignment Jehovah gave him on earth. By remaining loyal under the hardest test, he proved that a perfect human can remain faithful to God under any circumstance, sanctifying Jehovah’s name and providing the corresponding ransom.
Luke 23:43
This promise to the evildoer reflects the wonderful mercy of Jehovah and Jesus. It explains that God’s Kingdom will transform the earth into a real paradise, where even unrighteous people who never had the chance to know God will be resurrected. That gives us a very strong reason to value the ransom.
Practical lessons for our life
Do not give in to pressure
The contrast between Jesus’ attitude and Pilate’s teaches us never to give in to peer pressure or fear of man. At school, at work, or with unbelieving relatives, when people pressure us to break Bible principles, we should imitate Jesus’ courage and stand firm for the truth no matter the consequences.
Care for our family
The way Jesus cared for his mother Mary, even while facing death, highlights the importance of caring for family. In a practical way, this teaches us that true Christians should look after the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of parents and older relatives as an important part of sacred service.
Forgive like Jesus
The forgiveness Jesus offered to those who mistreated him gives us a great example for life in the congregation. If Jesus could forgive under such extreme circumstances, we should be ready to overlook minor offenses, avoid resentment, and always preserve peace and unity with our brothers and sisters.
Strengthen faith in the Son of God
Seeing the miraculous events that took place when Jesus died, such as the earthquake and the temple curtain being torn in two, strengthens our faith that he truly is the Son of God. This moves us to keep supporting his Kingdom faithfully with our energy, time, and resources, knowing that our service to Jehovah is never in vain.
The Resurrection of Jesus
This lesson helps us follow what happened from the empty tomb to Jesus’ appearances that strengthened the faith of his disciples.
Reading for lesson 91
Paragraph 1
ReadingAfter Jesus died, a rich man named Joseph asked Pilate for permission to remove Jesus’ body from the stake. Joseph wrapped Jesus’ body in fine linen cloths with fragrant spices and placed it in a new tomb. Then he had a large stone rolled in front of the entrance. The chief priests told Pilate: “We are concerned that Jesus’ disciples may steal the body and say that he was raised up.” So Pilate said: “Seal the tomb and post guards.”
Paragraph 2
ReadingThree days later, some women went to the tomb early in the morning. They discovered that someone had rolled the stone away and that the tomb was open. Inside the tomb there was an angel, who told them: “Do not be afraid. Jesus has been raised up. Tell the disciples to go to Galilee to meet him there.”
Paragraph 3
ReadingMary Magdalene quickly ran to find Peter and John. She told them: “Someone has taken Jesus’ body away.” Peter and John ran to the tomb. When they saw that it was empty, they returned to their homes.
Paragraph 4
ReadingLater, Mary returned to the tomb. There she saw two angels inside and said to them: “I do not know where they have taken my Lord.” Then she saw a man and thought he was the gardener. She asked him: “Sir, please tell me where you have put him.” When the man answered, “Mary!” she realized that it was Jesus. She said: “Teacher!” and held on to him. Jesus told her: “Tell my brothers that you have seen me.” Immediately Mary ran off and told the disciples that she had seen Jesus.
Paragraph 5
ReadingLater that same day, two disciples were traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus. A man joined them and asked what they were discussing. They said to him: “Have you not heard? Three days ago, the chief priests had Jesus killed. Now some women are saying that he is alive.” The man asked them: “Do you not believe the prophets? They said that the Christ had to die and afterward be raised up.” Then he continued explaining more things from the Scriptures. When they arrived at Emmaus, the disciples asked him to stay with them. While they were eating, he said a prayer over the bread, and the disciples realized that the man was Jesus. Then he disappeared.
Paragraph 6
ReadingThe two disciples ran back to Jerusalem. They arrived at the house where the apostles had gathered and told them what had happened. While they were inside the house, Jesus appeared to them. At first, the apostles could not believe that it was Jesus. But he told them: “Look at my hands, touch me. It was written that the Christ would rise from the dead.”
Questions and answers for lesson 91
What happened when the women went to Jesus’ tomb?
2 answersWhen the women arrived very early at the tomb, they were amazed to see that the huge stone at the entrance had been rolled away and the tomb was open. When they went inside, they found an angel who gave them the wonderful news that Jesus had been raised up and told them to inform the other disciples so they could go to Galilee and meet him there.
At first there was much confusion because of the shock. Mary Magdalene ran to tell Peter and John, thinking that the body had been stolen. But later, when Mary returned weeping near the tomb, the resurrected Jesus himself appeared to her. At first she mistook him for the gardener, but when she heard him call her by name, she immediately recognized him and ran with great joy to tell the apostles that the Lord was alive.
What happened on the road to Emmaus?
2 answersOn that road, two disciples were sad and talking about Jesus’ execution when the resurrected Jesus himself joined them, though they did not recognize him. Jesus used the journey to comfort them and correct their lack of faith, patiently explaining from the Scriptures and the prophets why the Christ had to suffer and be raised from the dead.
The most exciting part happened at the end of the trip. These two disciples invited the traveler to eat with them in Emmaus. At the moment when Jesus said a prayer over the bread and broke it, their eyes were opened and they realized it was their Master, just before he disappeared. This filled them with so much enthusiasm that they ran back that very night to Jerusalem to tell the apostles what had happened.
Bible references for lesson 91
John 14:6
This text fits perfectly with the miracle of the resurrection. By raising his Son from death, Jehovah proved that Jesus is the only means or “way” to approach God and gain everlasting “life.” His resurrection proved that all his teachings were “the truth,” and it gives us the absolute assurance that the promise of the future resurrection will be fulfilled without fail.
Luke 24:25-27
Here we notice how Jesus taught. He did not try to convince them simply by a display of power, but by reasoning with them from the Holy Scriptures. This gives us a very important pattern for our ministry. When we preach, we should always direct attention to the Bible so that people’s faith rests on God’s Word and not on human opinions.
Matthew 28:9, 10
In this passage, the resurrected Jesus greets the women and says to them: “Go, report to my brothers.” It is very moving to note that, even though the apostles had abandoned him on the night of his arrest, Jesus still called them “my brothers.” This teaches us how much Jesus values long-term loyalty and how tenderly he forgives human weaknesses.
Practical lessons for our life
Be courageous when needed
The example of Joseph of Arimathea teaches us to be courageous when circumstances require it. He was a rich man and a member of the court, yet he risked asking for Jesus’ body so that he could give him a dignified burial. This encourages us not to hide our identity as Jehovah’s Witnesses in our surroundings and to be ready to defend our faith with courage.
Nothing stops Jehovah’s purpose
The insistence of the authorities on sealing the tomb and posting guards reminds us that no human or political effort can stop the fulfillment of Jehovah’s purpose. Even if enemies of the truth try to place obstacles before God’s organization or the preaching work, Jehovah’s victory is always guaranteed.
Let the heart burn
The Emmaus disciples said that their heart was burning while Jesus explained the Scriptures to them on the road. This teaches us that personal study and deep meditation on God’s Word should not become mechanical; they should move our emotions and rekindle our desire to serve Jehovah with enthusiasm.
Build solid faith
The fact that Jesus appeared to the apostles and let them touch his hands shows how considerate he is. He understood that it was hard for them to believe something so amazing, so he gave them tangible proof to remove their doubts. In the same way today, through meetings and publications, Jehovah gives us enough spiritual food to keep our faith strong.

Recommended short comment
This week teaches me that Jesus stayed faithful right down to death and kept thinking about others, and that his resurrection fully confirmed Jehovah’s promises. That moves me to be courageous, to forgive, to trust in the ransom, and to strengthen my faith that Jesus is alive and ruling.

The chief priests took Jesus to the governor’s palace. There Pilate asked them: “What accusation do you bring against this man?” They answered: “He says that he is a king!” Pilate asked Jesus: “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied: “My Kingdom is no part of this world.”
