Reflection for today
When I hear the word “elder,” it can be easy to think first of assignments—talks, meetings, judicial matters, schedules, or congregation responsibilities. Peter’s word “shepherd,” though, brings the human side into focus. Shepherding involves noticing people. It means remembering who may be tired, discouraged, new, grieving, or quietly struggling. Much of that work is invisible to the congregation.
That thought can make me more reasonable in what I expect from elders. They may care deeply and still miss something. They may need time to respond. They have families, secular work, health concerns, and personal pressures too. Instead of measuring their love by whether they always anticipate my needs, I can make it easier for them to help me by communicating honestly and accepting sincere efforts even when they are not perfect.
I can also become part of the supportive atmosphere they are trying to build. If an elder gives a helpful talk or takes time to check on me, a short message of appreciation may strengthen him more than I realize. And rather than leaving all encouragement to appointed men, I can look around and notice others myself.
Good shepherding is a gift from Jehovah, but a healthy congregation is not produced by elders alone. Cooperation, gratitude, and mutual care allow their work to accomplish what it is meant to do—help people feel protected and spiritually nourished.
