Reflection for today
A person’s reputation is fragile because words travel faster than context. Psalm 15:3 makes me think not only about obvious lies but also about the careless way true fragments can be used to create a false impression. I may repeat something accurately and still be unfair if I leave out what I do not know.
One sentence often used to excuse gossip is, “I’m just telling you what I heard.” But passing uncertainty to another person multiplies uncertainty; it does not turn it into truth. Love may require me to stop a story rather than improve it with my own theory.
I can use three questions before sharing personal information: Is it verified? Is it mine to tell? Will telling it serve a necessary and constructive purpose? If the answer is no, silence may be the most loyal choice.
Of course, protecting someone’s reputation does not mean hiding serious matters from those who genuinely need to know in order to give help or protection. The difference is motive and destination. Responsible communication seeks assistance; gossip seeks an audience.
I would like people to feel safe around me, knowing that their private struggles will not become conversation material. Guarding another person’s name is a quiet form of love. It may never be noticed, but Jehovah notices the restraint behind the words I choose not to say.
