The Disciples Receive Holy Spirit
This lesson reviews what happened at Pentecost in the year 33 and how holy spirit moved the Christian congregation forward.
Reading for lesson 94
Paragraph 2
ReadingThe people who had traveled from other countries to Jerusalem heard the noise and ran toward the house to see what was happening. They were very surprised when they heard the disciples speaking in other languages. They said: “These people are from Galilee, so how is it that they can speak in our own languages?”
Paragraph 3
ReadingThen Peter and the other apostles stood up in front of everyone. Peter explained: “You killed Jesus, but Jehovah resurrected him. Now Jesus is in heaven at God’s right hand. And he has given us the holy spirit he promised us. That is why you have seen and heard these miracles.”
Paragraph 4
ReadingThe people were deeply impressed. Peter’s words touched their hearts, so they asked: “What should we do?” He replied: “Repent of your sins and get baptized in Jesus’ name. Then you too will receive the gift of the holy spirit.” About 3,000 people were baptized that day. From then on, more and more disciples began to appear in Jerusalem. The apostles formed more congregations with the help of the holy spirit. In that way they were able to teach the disciples all the things Jesus had commanded.
Questions and answers for lesson 94
What happened at the Festival of Pentecost in the year 33?
2 answersAt that festival, Jesus’ promise about the holy spirit was fulfilled. While about 120 disciples were gathered in an upper room, a loud sound like a rushing wind was heard and tongues as if of fire appeared over their heads. Miraculously, all the disciples present were anointed and began speaking fluently in different foreign languages they had never known before.
Something happened that drew the attention of thousands of Jews of the Dispersion who were visiting Jerusalem. When they heard the roar and listened to ordinary Galileans declaring the magnificent things of God in their own native languages, the crowd was astonished. This gave the apostle Peter the opportunity to stand up and deliver a courageous speech explaining that what they were witnessing was direct proof that Jehovah had resurrected Jesus and exalted him in heaven.
Why were so many people baptized?
2 answersSo many people were baptized because Peter’s speech, guided by holy spirit, deeply moved their hearts. He proved to them from the Scriptures that the man the nation had executed was actually the Messiah. Feeling sincere remorse and asking what they should do, they gladly accepted Peter’s exhortation to repent, change course, and get baptized in Jesus’ name for the forgiveness of their sins.
There was such a massive response because these people already had a basic knowledge of the Scriptures as Jews or devout proselytes. They did not need to learn from scratch who Jehovah was or what the Law meant; the one thing missing was accepting that Jesus was the Son of God. When they received that truth with the backing of the Pentecost miracle, about 3,000 people did not hesitate to take the step of baptism that very day.
Bible references for lesson 94
Romans 10:9
This verse connects with what the new disciples did at Pentecost. To be saved, it was not enough for them to feel something inwardly; they had to “make public declaration” of their faith through water baptism and acknowledge Jesus as their Lord. The lesson for us is that true faith moves us to give a public witness about our beliefs and to remain firm in the dedication we have made to Jehovah.
Acts 2:38
In this passage, Peter explains that repentance and baptism are essential requirements before a person can receive the holy spirit. Although today God’s spirit does not enable us to speak languages miraculously, this reference assures us that Jehovah willingly gives us his active force to produce the fruitage of the spirit and to carry out our preaching work effectively.
John 15:26
Jesus called the holy spirit “the helper.” What happened at Pentecost showed that this helper came with power to direct the newly formed Christian congregation. This verse teaches us that holy spirit is the force that has sustained the worldwide witness from the year 33 down to our day, overcoming every political or religious obstacle.
Practical lessons for our life
Ask for holy spirit to speak with boldness
Peter’s transformation shows us the power of the holy spirit. Just a few weeks earlier, Peter had denied Jesus out of fear of a servant girl, but at Pentecost he spoke with remarkable courage before thousands of people. This comforts us because it reminds us that when we feel shy or afraid in the ministry, we can ask Jehovah for his spirit so that he gives us the strength and boldness we need.
Work within theocratic order
The fact that congregations were formed right away and that they were taught “all the things” highlights the importance of theocratic order. From the beginning, the disciples remained under the direction of the apostles. Today we show a similar spirit when we cooperate closely with the body of elders in our congregation and follow the direction of the faithful and discreet slave.
Value international unity
When we see that Jews from so many nations were united in one faith regardless of their language background, we understand that Jehovah’s people have always been a united brotherhood. Holy spirit does not divide; it unites. This moves us to value the wonderful international unity we enjoy today at assemblies and to work hard to preserve peace in our local congregation.
Do not delay baptism
The willingness of those 3,000 people to get baptized “that day” teaches us that when someone understands the truth of God’s Word and has the right motivation, he should not unnecessarily delay his dedication. This encourages Bible students who attend meetings to keep progressing spiritually toward the goal of baptism.
Nothing Stops Them
This lesson shows how Jehovah strengthened the apostles to keep preaching even when they faced threats, prison, and religious opposition.
Reading for lesson 95
Paragraph 1
ReadingA man who could not walk used to sit every day at the temple gate begging for money. One afternoon he saw Peter and John arriving at the temple and said: “Please give me something.” Peter answered: “I can give you something better than money. In the name of Jesus, get up and walk!” Then Peter helped him stand up, and the man began walking. The people were so excited when they saw this miracle that many became believers.
Paragraph 2
ReadingBut the priests and the Sadducees became furious. They seized the apostles, took them before the court of religious leaders called the Sanhedrin, and asked them: “Who gave you the power to heal that man?” Peter replied: “The power came from Jesus Christ, the man you killed.” The religious leaders shouted at them: “Stop speaking about Jesus!” The apostles said: “We have to speak about him. We will not keep quiet.”
Paragraph 3
ReadingThen Peter and John were released, and they immediately went to tell the other disciples what had happened. All together they prayed to Jehovah: “Please help us to be courageous so that we can keep speaking about you.” Jehovah gave them holy spirit, and that enabled them to keep preaching and performing healings. More and more people became believers. The Sadducees were so jealous that they put the apostles in prison. But that night Jehovah sent an angel who opened the prison doors and told the apostles: “Go back to the temple and preach there.”
Paragraph 4
ReadingThe next morning, someone reported to the Sanhedrin: “The prison is locked, but the men you arrested are no longer inside! They are in the temple preaching!” So the apostles were arrested again and taken to the Sanhedrin. The high priest said: “We already ordered you not to speak anymore about Jesus!” Peter answered: “We must obey God as ruler rather than men.”
Paragraph 5
ReadingThe religious leaders were so enraged that they wanted to kill the apostles. Then a Pharisee named Gamaliel stood up and said: “Be careful! Perhaps God is with these men. Do you really want to fight against God?” They listened to him. They let the apostles go, although first they beat them with rods and once more ordered them to stop preaching. But that did not stop the apostles. They kept preaching courageously in the temple and from house to house.
Questions and answers for lesson 95
Why did the disciples not stop preaching?
2 answersThe disciples did not stop preaching because they clearly understood what their spiritual priority was. When the Sanhedrin tried to intimidate them by forbidding them to speak in Jesus’ name, the apostles established the legal and moral principle that guides us to this day, courageously declaring that they had to obey God as ruler rather than men. They knew that the divine command to bear witness to the Kingdom was infinitely superior to any human decree.
They did not stop because love for Jehovah and gratitude for the things they had seen and heard were stronger than fear of persecution. Neither arrests, nor threats, nor even physical beatings with rods extinguished their zeal. On the contrary, they viewed the preaching work as a sacred privilege, which moved them to go on declaring the good news with boldness both in public places and from house to house.
How did Jehovah help them?
2 answersJehovah helped them directly through his holy spirit and the intervention of his angels. When the congregation united in asking him to grant them boldness, Jehovah immediately responded by pouring out his active force so that they could speak with courage. In addition, when they were imprisoned out of jealousy, Jehovah sent an angel who miraculously opened the prison doors and instructed them to continue teaching in the temple.
He also helped them by using unexpected people within the Sanhedrin itself to protect their lives. Jehovah moved a highly respected teacher of the Law named Gamaliel to intervene on behalf of the apostles and warn the court about the danger of fighting against God. Thanks to that prudent advice, the religious leaders gave up on killing them at that moment and released them.
Bible references for lesson 95
Acts 5:29
This verse contains the official position of Jehovah’s people toward the authorities of the world when they oppose our worship. We respect human governments, but if they order us to violate Bible laws, our loyalty belongs first to the Creator. Peter’s declaration continues to guide us in lands where our preaching work is banned or restricted.
Acts 4:29, 30
It is very instructive to note that in this prayer the disciples did not ask Jehovah to remove the trials or punish their persecutors. The only thing they requested was that he take note of their threats and help them keep speaking with great boldness. This teaches us to ask for wisdom and strength to endure and remain active when we face opposition in our territory.
Acts 5:41, 42
This passage says that the apostles left the Sanhedrin rejoicing because they had been mistreated for the sake of Jesus’ name. This shows that persecution does not diminish the joy of a true Christian when loyalty is the motive. In a very practical way, it teaches us that hardships in the ministry can be endured with joy when we know that we have Jehovah’s approval.
Practical lessons for our life
Always give the glory to Jesus Christ
The miracle of healing the lame man reminds us that the apostles did not seek glory for themselves; they immediately directed attention to Jesus Christ. This gives us an excellent example of modesty in our ministry today: when we help a Bible student make progress and take spiritual steps, we should always give the credit to Jehovah and to the guidance of his organization, never to our own teaching ability.
Value house-to-house preaching
The disciples’ insistence on preaching “from house to house” despite the ban shows that this method of preaching has deep Scriptural roots and Jehovah’s blessing. Although today we also use other methods such as literature carts and informal witnessing, visiting people in their homes remains a primary avenue for searching out those who are deserving.
Trust in angelic support
When we see the angel intervene to free the apostles, our faith grows stronger because we know we are not alone in the work. Angels are still directing the preaching today, helping us find people who are sighing and groaning over the conditions in the world. That moves us to persevere even in territories that seem difficult or indifferent.
Avoid jealousy and rejoice over others’ progress
The reaction of the Sadducees, who became filled with jealousy over the congregation’s growth, warns us about the danger of harboring negative feelings. In the congregation, we should sincerely rejoice when we see other brothers receiving privileges, progressing spiritually, or having better results in the field ministry, always maintaining a spirit of unity and brotherly love.

Ten days had passed since Jesus had returned to heaven. Then Jesus’ disciples received holy spirit. It was the Festival of Pentecost of the year 33, and people from many places had arrived in Jerusalem to celebrate it. About 120 disciples of Jesus were gathered in an upper room of a house when, suddenly, something astonishing happened. What looked like a flame of fire appeared above each disciple’s head, and they all began speaking in different languages. In addition, the sound of a strong wind was heard throughout the house.
