Reflection for today
A long life gives a person something that cannot be downloaded or learned overnight: perspective. Older Christians may have watched situations unfold over decades. They have seen which choices produced peace, which shortcuts caused trouble, and which Bible principles remained dependable through changing circumstances. That does not make every older person automatically right, but it gives me a good reason to listen carefully.
Sometimes advice can sound old-fashioned because the examples come from another time. I can easily dismiss the whole message because the setting feels unfamiliar. A wiser approach is to separate the principle from the packaging. The technology, workplace, or social expectations may have changed, while the underlying issue—pride, patience, loyalty, money, relationships, or conscience—may be very familiar.
I can apply Job 12:12 by deliberately asking a mature older Christian for perspective before making a major decision. Instead of only asking for an answer, I could ask, “What have you seen over the years that might help me think about this?”
Of course, experience never replaces the Bible, and personal opinions remain personal. Still, humility allows me to benefit from lessons someone else learned at a cost I may not need to pay myself. Listening to older ones can widen my view and help me make decisions with more patience and fewer blind spots.
