Reflection for today
Mary Magdalene’s experience shows how quickly grief can narrow our field of vision. She was standing close to an extraordinary answer, yet all she could see at first was loss. Jesus did not shame her for that. He noticed her, spoke to her personally, and then entrusted her with something meaningful to do.
I find that deeply practical. When someone is hurting, I may be tempted to hurry him toward a positive conclusion because I am uncomfortable with sadness. Jesus’ example encourages a different response: notice first. Listen. Let the person’s pain be real before trying to solve it.
There is also something powerful about the assignment Mary received. Encouragement is not always passive comfort. Sometimes a person begins to recover when he remembers that he is still useful and trusted. A thoughtful invitation to join in the ministry, help with a simple task, or share something encouraging may restore a sense of purpose.
For my own difficult days, Mary’s morning reminds me not to assume that what I see now is the whole story. Tears can make the future look closed when it is not. I may not receive a dramatic change in circumstances, but Jehovah can give me the next step, the right person to speak with, or a reason to keep serving.
A painful moment can be real without being final.
